Category Description for Saxon Phonics Intervention
The author of Saxon Phonics has written this remedial program for older students who never received phonics instruction or continue to struggle as readers. For many years, public schools have scorned phonics in favor of sight reading and other experimental methods. Only recently have we begun to see a resurgence of phonics in the schools. Whereas only a handful of publishers produced phonics books or curricula several years ago, now every catalog I see has several "new" programs. It's amazing! However, there are still many students and adults who have "fallen through the cracks" and missed receiving proper instruction. I personally know several who permanently turned off to reading because of frustration in their early years. If you have an older student who is still deficient in these skills, this program will fill in all the gaps. While not comprehensive in scope, its 100 lessons provide a one-year in-depth course including phonics instruction, spelling, syllabication, dictionary skills, phonetic coding, reading comprehension, alphabetizing and vocabulary. Phonics instruction begins with consonant review and short vowels then covers blends, consonant digraphs, blends, long vowel constructs, sight words, r-controlled vowels, suffixes, vowel digraphs, silent letters, vowel diphthongs, several trigraphs, some affixes and the quadrigraph "eigh". Interspersed with the phonics lessons are lessons which focus on syllabication or spelling rules. Students don't just learn to decode in this course; they thoroughly analyze each word by rule, marking each with appropriate diacritical marks as an aid to reading. Like all Saxon products, continual review and regular, cumulative assessments (after every 6th lesson) help aid retention. Lesson plans are contained in the large, spiral bound Teacher Manual. As with the lower level program, the lessons are systematic and dialogued with clear instructions. Cumulative reviews and assessments are contained here as well, along with remediation activities, vocabulary tests, speed drills, and extensive reading, spelling, and vocabulary word lists. The consumable Student Workbook is both a reference book and a worktext. It includes coding and reading exercises, reading comprehension worksheets, tests, word lists, and other reference material. Classroom Materials consist of six decks of flash cards, an audiotape of phonetic sounds, and assorted blackline masters. All three are needed to use the program and are included in the Home Study Kit below.

over 3 years agoExactly what we were missingI have a 4th grader who has been struggling with reading. We believe he also has some learning blocks and is doing Brain Training Therapy that we also purchased from Rainbow Resource. Phonics Intervention has been very helpful for him. It is straight to the point, incremental and very complete. We have a 1st grader who is also doing the program along side of him so we aren't doing double phonics work. She easily keeps up. We have also turned this into our spelling program by not only reading the words each day, but by spelling them as well. If you want a complete phonics programs that moves quickly, and completely, I would recommend this program.September 25, 2015Purchased
over 3 years agoAt the end of my daughters year of K class we were told she should be held back to take it again due to her slow learning we decided to take on homeschooling with both feet We were often told that she would just take off some time when every thing started to click for her So we spent about 2 years trying to gently open the shell she created for herself and slowly built up her confidence that she may be a slow learner but only because she has a different style of learning It took us awhile to get the hang of her style meanwhile a younger sister soon passed her in reading It started to bother her a little and was now ready to get serious No matter how hard she worked it didnt seem to come to her she just kept getting all the sounds mixed up She described it as she new the sounds in her head but couldn't get the right ones to come out She also hated how babyish all the programs seemed or memorizing word lists didn't come to her well either That is when i set out to look for something that was for older kids but still covered the basics from the beginning and kept a good consistant pace with lots of review and no pressure for wrong answers This program is totally it It addresses all the learning styles all the senses with seeing saying hearing and writing Constant review before every lesson coding marks with words ed lessons examples spelling rules sight words talks in teacher notes about different accents in different parts of the country and to teach accordingly I am just amazed at how easy it is to use and how through it is And my daughter is very proud of how far she has come and works harder to get better She is very committed to learning how to read with this program and that makes ALL the difference in learning for her Well worth every penny for the confidence and happiness it has brought my daughterJanuary 25, 2013My son struggled with phonics from day 1 We tried several different programs but nothing seemed to click I was almost ready to throw in the towel and send him to public school Thankfully I found Phonics Intervention He breezed through the first 15 lessons or so and his confidence soared After working diligently through the book he is now reading quite well All the skeptical family members are quite impressed with his progress! Thanks to Saxon we are going to keep on homeschooling!April 6, 2009We have been using Phonics Intervention for 5 months with fabulous results My student has jumped two grade levels in reading with only half of the curriculum finished There is little to no teacher preparation Once you learn the pattern of activities each day is a breeze I did extensive research to find a suitable phonics program and I am extremely pleased with this purchase It takes about 45 minutes each day and it has 100 lessonsJanuary 1, 2008
