Company helpful but program didn't work for us.
I think this type of program would have worked better if I had tried this program earlier in our schooling. We only needed Literature/Composition this year. I tried the Lang. Arts 8 because my students are in 8th and 9th grade and I had heard good reviews especially for high schoolers. (I did buy the Eng. 1 but when I saw that Lang. Arts 8 started with MLA format I changed my 9th grader to the Lang. Arts 8.) But our computer is old and apparently runs on Vista, so the program would not allow for half of the questions to be typed. The company did call me and answer as many question on line as possible but I just took it to my computer wiz who did the best he could but the problem did not get resolved. The second problem is that the writing assignments must still be graded by the teacher but there is no instructions on how to do this, so the teacher will have to read all the assignments along with the student. (I felt this negated the advantage of having a computer based program. I know they do have an online program available but the price is out of our budget.) It doesn't help that I'm a "paper" person and would have rather had a printable teacher guide (and honestly a student book that I could look through and read at my leisure.) I also had problems with assigning assignments since our calendar has changed during this first six weeks. It looks like on some days the students will have 5 assignments because it tries to do all the assignments. I know I could remove some but not sure which ones would be less necessary or how to to do that type of adjustment. All said I don't think the program is "bad" just didn't work for this "paper" based teacher.

My son will be transitioning from homeschool into a private school for high school next year. We've used SOS for preparing our older children for the same transition. It's thorough and interesting enough. The kids have found it somewhat tedious, but at this point in their schooling, they need something reliably thorough. SOS Language Arts 8th grade is a good compromise.

Heard about Switched on Schoolhouse for years. I wanted a more self-directed (and graded) computer program for teenagers that I would like to see become more independent learners.
