Exploring the World of Chemistry

Additional Details
Product Description
An introductory history of chemistry, this extremely readable text covers discoveries and developments from ancient to present times. Major emphasis is placed on the contributions of individual scientists (such as Cavendish, Mendeleev, Boyle, and Rutherford) and how they made their discoveries. The focus is not on balancing chemical equations or learning the number of electrons in specific elements. 16 chapters cover: ancient metals (iron, lead, tin), money metals (gold, silver, copper), the search for gold, gases in the air, the use of currents to separate elements, the first periodic table, using a spectroscope to identify elements, cathode ray tubes and alpha particle experiments, compounds by electric attraction, water and its unique properties, carbon and its compounds, organic chemistry, nitrogen and its compounds, silicon and its compounds, modern metals, and chemistry in today's world.
Category Description for Exploring… Series (John H. Tiner Series)
These softcover texts explore science topics from a Christian perspective and include review questions for assessment. Books are divided by topical chapter, each containing informative text, black-and-white illustrations and photos, and review questions. The text is engagingly written, weaving in stories of scientific discovery and famous scientists, instead of simply offering facts. While the visuals are black-and-white, they are detailed and clearly labeled. Review questions consist of true/false and multiple choice questions, along with a short list of questions students can use for further research, writing assignments, or be extended into projects. Answers to the short answer questions are found in the back along with a glossary and index. This series could form the core of an upper-elementary or middle school science program, or be used as topical supplements to study a topic in more detail. If using for a science program, I would recommend supplementing with more hands-on experiments, or extending the topics provided at the end of the chapter into additional assignments. 160 pgs each. - Jess

We used this book with our children (ages 9-15) as an introduction to chemistry We had used Exploring the History of Medicine the previous year and found Tiner's style to be engaging This book was so interesting I sat down one night and read through the entire text I highly recommend this book for junior high and high school students It is not extensive enough to serve as a stand-alone chemistry text for a highschool year but it is a great introduction John Hudson Tiner presents the material in small vignettes not really in "textbook" format but in short stories that you will never forget Students gain a grasp for the fundamentals of chemistry in the world all around them Each chapter contains multiple choice questions which can be used as quiz material Answers are in the backThis is a book students can work through alone together or with parental guidance They will enjoy it- Was this review helpful? It does have questions at the end of each chapter and answers in the back of the book. I'd say it's a 7th grade level introduction. Gives history, biographies and some basic concepts of chemistry. Master books has a website too.

At the end of each chapter there are about 15 questions, on average, with True/False, fill in the blank, or multiple choice answers. An answer key is provided in the back of the book.- Reply
