Memoria Press Classical Curriculum

Memoria Press now provides you with complete curriculum guides for grades K-8 using the classical methodology. Recitation is used in every level for memorization of basic facts, systematic phonics and good books are used for reading education, copywork is used for teaching Bible truths, and music and art are included for enrichment. Each guide offers complete lesson plans for a one-year course of study.

Preschool for 2-3 year-olds is coming soon, and this program emphasizes colors, shapes, numbers, rhymes, and other early concepts. Jr. Kindergarten comes next, which emphasizes the alphabet and numbers. The Kindergarten level is written for five half-days and provides instruction in reading, correct pencil grip, letter and number formation, and basic arithmetic counting, adding, subtracting, telling time, and counting money. Children ages 4-6 can use the program if they are reading ready, have the ability to count to 10, print their name, recognize most letters, rhyme words, and segment sounds.

Grades 1 and 2 continue in the development of reading skills by incorporating more good books and Memoria Press study guides, which focus on vocabulary, spelling, comprehension, and composition skills. The books that are read at each level also serve to introduce children to history/geography and science, as well as good literature. Copywork, recitation, music, art, math, and cursive instruction are also included.

Grade 3 continues the quality of the classical education. This guide continues with Latin using Latina Christiana I, includes classic reading Farmer Boy, Charlotte's Web, A Bear Called Paddington, Mr. Popper's Penguins, and introduces students to Greek mythology with D'Aulaire. They will learn about states and capitals, astronomy, and poetry along with the rich content found in their language arts components.

In the revised program sequence, the student is given two years to complete many of the courses begun in Grade 3, so Grade 4 continues with Latina Christiana, D'Aulaire's Greek Myths, Christian Studies I, States & Capitals, and English Grammar Recitation 1. Literature guides at this level include: Cricket in Times Square, Dangerous Journey, Blue Fairy Book, and Homer Price. Other non-continuing programs in 4th grade include Book of Astronomy and Classical Composition: The Fable Stage.

Grade 5 moves on to First Form Latin, Famous Men of Rome, Classical Composition: Narrative Stage, and Geography I. Geography I will help them learn about the Middle East, Europe & North Africa in both historical and present day; science will include a study of insects. Literature includes The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Heidi and Lassie Come Home.

Grade 6 continues Latin with Second Form Latin, tackles medieval history with literature selections including King Arthur, Robin Hood, Door in the Wall, and Adam of the Road. History is Famous Men of the Middle Ages, and science is the study of birds and medicine. Students will also begin Geography II, Classical Composition: Chreia/Maxim and Christian Studies III.

Highlights from 7th Grade include starting Pre-Algebra with College of the Redwoods Pre-Algebra (book contents are available free online), exploring American history with Story of the Thirteen Colonies & the Great Republic and 200 Questions About American History, and learning about trees and biology in science. Third Form Latin, Christian Studies IV, Famous Men of Greece, and Classical Composition: Refutation-Confirmation continue programs carried over from previous levels. Literature at this level includes Anne of Green Gables, Bronze Bow, The Hobbit, and The Trojan War.

In Grade 8, programs of study include Algebra I, Fourth Form Latin, Book of the Ancient Greeks, Book of the Ancient World, Iliad, Odyssey, Poetry and Short Stories: American Literature, Classical Composition: Common Topic, Geography III, and Exploring Planet Earth. Henle Latin I is a required supplement

The Curriculum Manuals are well-formatted and easy to use. In the front of each book you will find a checklist of the materials needed at that level, an explanation of this curriculum, instructions for lesson implementation, a recommended schedule and blank schedule for your own planning purposes, and 33 weeks of detailed lesson plans. The appendices include prayers, letter activities, recitation, memory verses, read-aloud book list, poetry list and selections, and a paintings/music list for kindergarten and first grade. Supplemental phonics activities and suggestions for studying spelling words, along with spelling lists, are included in the first grade book. The second grade appendices includes resources similar to the previous levels, with a world map worksheet, social studies study guide, read-aloud suggestions, and Latin cursive lesson sheets as well. These pages are reproducible for family or classroom use

Rod and Staff Math is used at all levels of the curriculum along with Spelling Workout. These classical guides take the work out of using the classical approach by laying everything out in a user-friendly format. Memoria Press has a familiar feel that gives an element of comfort to using their curriculum. Resource lists of courses and books used at each level are listed by grade level here (except for Rod & Staff, which we cannot list online). Resource packages by grade level will be available soon, or you can select just the items you need by grade level.

This series is for the parent who wants a good classical curriculum which is outlined and ready to use. Simply open the book and follow the instructions. You will be well on your way to a quality education for your young ones. ~ Donna
